DNR Seeks Public Comment on Air Permit for Lee County Koch Fertilizer Plant

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on a proposed air quality construction permit for a Lee County manufacturing facility.

The permit involves Koch Fertilizer Wever, located at 3550 180th Street near Wever. The company has applied for approval to replace flare tips and pilot burners on both its front-end and back-end flares.

According to the DNR, the project is designed to help ensure the flares operate without producing smoke. Koch manufactures ammonia, granulated urea, liquid urea, and urea ammonium nitrate at the facility.

The DNR says construction permits are reviewed before facilities build new or modify existing sources of air pollution to ensure they meet state and federal air quality standards.

The public is encouraged to review the draft permit and submit written comments before 4:30 p.m. on July 31. The DNR says all public comments will be considered before a final decision is made. Draft permits can be viewed through the Iowa DNR’s online air quality permit portal.
